What is WELS?
WELS is the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod.

That's quite a mouthful but here's what it means:

Wisconsin:  Our church body was organized in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1850. Although a large number of the churches are located in the Midwest, the WELS is active in all fifty states and worldwide.

Evangelical:  This word is a combination of two Greek words which mean "good" and "to tell", so "evangelical" is "to tell good news". The WELS is committed to sharing the good news of Jesus.

Lutheran:  Martin Luther lived from 1483-1546; he was a pastor who brought reforms to the church at that time. His emphasis was on the Bible's message of a person's being saved by God's undeserved love for us and not by anything that we can do. While we don't worship the man, we do appreciate his teachings based on God's Word.

Synod:  This word (pronounced "sin-ud") is a combination of two Greek words which mean "together" and "way/road", so "synod" is "walking together". The WELS is a "walking together" of Christians who have studied God's Word together and share the same doctrines. Our synod serves over 1,200 congregations with over 400,000 souls in the United States and Canada. Our world mission work extends to 5 continents and more than 25 countries.
